Graduate Student Society – GRADventures 2016 Orientation


Welcome to UBC! Join your GSS (Graduate Student Society) as we host a myriad of orientation events throughout September to help you get acquainted with student life at UBC and in Vancouver.


The main GSS Orientation Day will bring various opportunities to learn more about the campus and experience our city, including tours, workshops, a booth fair, and so much more! There will even be a popular Vancouver harbour sunset boat cruise to top off the day!


Throughout the month of September, we will host events such as a hiking trip to the Chief, Beach Day, Sundae Social, and even a whale watching excursion!

3-5pm • Koerner’s Pub

Killer patios, epic food, live music & craft beer. After a day of welcoming activities, come to relax, have a drink, and mingle with your GSS Student Executives (Graduate Student Society) and fellow new graduate students.

September 2, 2016: GSS Orientation Day


9-11am • Courtyard

Rise early as the GSS Student Executive cooks up a storm of this Canadian breakfast classic for everyone. Fuel up on fresh, made-on-the-spot delicious pancakes before you take in the rest of Orientation Day.


10am, 11am, 12pm, 3pm • Museum of Anthropology

Join a 60-minute guided tour of Museum of Anthropology (MOA), a popular UBC attraction that houses one of the world’s finest collections of art and cultural artifacts.


10am-1pm • Thea’s Lounge

Learn about the many resources available to graduate students, connect with various on-campus groups, and check out the myriad of opportunities for you to get involved at UBC.


10:15am, 11:15am, 12:15am, 2:15am • Courtyard

New to UBC? Join this FREE 45-minute tour to learn your way around campus and definitely the spots you will need to know. Tours are led by current graduate students with the inside knowledge, so ask away!

A GSS Graduate Orientation favourite. Race across campus in teams on a scavenger hunt that tests your UBC knowledge, creativity and luck. Compete for fun or to win great prizes.

Did you know your health plan covers ambulance fees, 100% of vaccinations up to $150, AND travel insurance? Or that you can add spouses and dependants for an extra fee? Learn what you are covered for and how to maximize the plan to keep $$ in YOUR pocket.

Presented by the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers

We could all use a little extra cash to pay for school or fun on the weekends. Come learn about the offices and departments that hire students and the benefits of working on campus while enhancing your resume at the same time.

Successful Off Campus Living – Know Your Rights and Don’t Get Scammed! • 3pm • 50 mins
Presented by the Tenant Resource Advisory Centre of BC

Living off campus can be a challenge for any students. Leases, utilities, ordinances, transportation… these issues and more simply add to what can already be a stressful academic transition! Learn what your rights are as a tenant and keep money in your pocket by avoiding potential scams.


6-10pm • Granville Island, Vancouver

Wrap up Orientation Day with this premier GSS event and set sail for a stunning sunset, great music and sight of sparkling city lights. Tickets are limited; RSVP early.

9am-4pm • Stawamus Chief Provincial Park (Squamish, BC)

Get out and experience the Canadian great outdoors on this 4-hour round trip iconic hike near Vancouver that includes breaks and selfie stops with panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, glaciers and the city of Squamish below.

THIS IS A INTERMEDIATE/DIFFICULT HIKE! With over 530m in elevation gain in 1.5km, shoes/boots with good support and at least 1 litre of water are a must. No sandals/Converse! Other recommendations:

  • Bring snacks or a lunch for a picnic with a view at the top!
  • Wear fitness clothing (stretchy or quick dry hiking clothes) and we would advise against jeans.
  • Hiking poles are recommended but not required (and will not made fun of. We’ll actually be jealous)

  • 8:00am: Please arrive early to check in for the bus.
  • Bus will leave at 8:15am sharp!
  • No coffee shops near the GSS Office are open at this time – bring breakfast and coffee with you or eat at home!

Get ready to bump, set and spike! Have a last summer blast with your GSS as we spend an afternoon at one of the most popular and scenic beaches in Vancouver. Come to play beach volleyball and make it a day out in the sun with a BYOPicnic (Bring-your-own-picnic).

Can YOU stop a sexual assault? As a new UBC grad student, we can show you how. Join us for a FREE Active Bystander training session.

FREE lunch ticket to GSS BBQ Lunch for students who complete the Active Bystander training. The GSS BBQ Lunch will follow immediately after the workshop.

Tellin’ It Like It Is – Graduate Student Panel • Time TBA • 60 mins

There is no one better to ask your questions about grad school than to current graduate students! We’ll take submitted questions from the audience for a customized panel experience. Our panel includes both Masters and PhD students from varied disciplines.

Time Management • Time TBA • 60 mins
Presented by UBC Student Wellness Outreach

Many students have to balance a variety of commitments outside their studies, which may include a job or career, children and family, hobbies and personal life. And everyone has different amounts that they can balance while still being mentally well. This workshop helps you identify where they currently spend their time, and how you’d like their time to be better managed. You will earn effective time management strategies that you can personalize to fit their values, priorities, and lifestyle in order to reduce stress and achieve success.

How to Help a Friend: Assisting a Student in Distress • Time TBA • 60 mins
Presented by UBC Student Wellness Outreach

This session will focus on how to support a peer in distress, providing a framework for navigating a conversation with a peer in need of support. Students will learn how to help their friends and peers reduce distress and skills to encourage them to access support and resources. This workshop will also discuss the importance of setting personal boundaries, practicing self-care when supporting someone in distress, and where student leaders can debrief and access support for themselves.

We are cracking open the best of the local autumn brews along with firing up the BBQ to serve up burgers. Sample those that are staples and find unique new favourites while mingling with fellow grad students.

Celebrate surviving the first week of classes and get acquainted with Vancouver’s nightlife, starting with a Vancouver staple, Venue. Located in the middle of the Granville strip in Downtown Vancouver, Venue boasts the best sound systems, lightshow and offers not one but TWO dance floors. GSNO is a night not to be missed!


  • A $10 ticket gets you entry BEFORE 12am and VIP lineup. Tickets are limited!
  • Hard copy tickets MUST be picked up before the event at 6371 Crescent Road between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday starting August 31st.
